PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) has a new name: PMOS, or polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome.

I’ve spent decades caring for women with PCOS. I’ve worked alongside PCOS researchers, written medical articles, helped develop treatment approaches, and volunteered countless hours with PCOS advocacy groups. So this name change feels deeply personal and important to me.

There are thoughtful arguments in favor of the new name, especially because PCOS has never been just about “cysts.” It is a complex, whole-body metabolic, endocrine, reproductive, and lifelong condition.

But there are also serious concerns. Many patients, clinicians, researchers, and advocates are asking whether the benefits of changing such a well-established name outweigh the costs: confusion, loss of searchability, rebranding, disrupted education efforts, and the feeling among some in the PCOS community that their voices were not fully heard.

Tonight, I’ll be talking through the name change, the pros and cons, and the bigger question: What actually serves women with this condition?

Progesterone and progestins — They sound similar and in some cases, they have similar effects, but they are not the same. Every woman in menopause (and younger women on hormonal contraceptives) need to know the differences between these compounds.

You deserve to know what you have been prescribed and why. You should understand risks and benefits. And most importantly, when choices are made about your care, you should be part of the decision making process.

In today’s talk, we’ll discuss the class of hormones known collectively as progestagens. We’ll explore the similarities between human identical progesterone and synthetic progestins and what you need to know if you are taking menopausal hormone therapy.

These differences matter.
