About Dr. Gersh

After receiving my medical degree from the USC School of Medicine, I studied Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Kaiser Hospital in Los Angeles, where I was awarded the CREOG award as the top resident every year. Soon after graduating I became Board-Certified, and over the following years as a practicing OB/GYN, I developed a unique take on women’s healthcare.

From the beginning of my career, my approach to medicine has been inclusive, which is why I have always incorporated treatments rarely found within the confines of conventional American medicine.

I followed my interest in holistic approaches to healing, and graduated from the two-year Fellowship in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona.

My primary job is Director of the Integrative Medical Group of Irvine, which focuses on understanding women’s innate physical and emotional make-up. Through my research, using state-of-the-art procedures and technology, I have come to understand that women have an internal natural rhythm.

This rhythm is affected by hormones, namely estrogen, and may be kept in balance through both conventional and holistic treatments. While pharmaceuticals deal with symptoms, they can also disrupt the body’s natural ability to heal and affect women’s reproductive functions.

At the Integrative Medical Group of Irvine, we help our patients understand what drugs can and can’t do for the body to enable them to take control of their health.

Outside of my practice, I speak at various lectures, host webinars and appear on numerous podcasts. I’m a prolific writer on numerous topics relevant to women’s health.

I am also currently writing my first book, on PCOS, which is due to be released in the fall. My goal is to provide the very best care for my patients, using every tool available, and to teach doctors around the world about the importance of creating a healthy environment within the female body.

I’m very proud to have been recognised for my work. I have been awarded the Orange County Medical Association’s ‘Physician of the Year’ Award for the last 13 years consecutively, and Southern California’s ‘SuperDoctor’ Award for the last several years.

In my role as a physician teacher, I served as Assistant Clinical Professor of OB/GYN at Keck USC School of Medicine for 12 years, for which I was awarded the Outstanding Volunteer Clinical Faculty Award.

I also serve my medical community, and have been active in organized medicine; I have served on the Legislative Committee at the Orange County Medical Association and as a delegate to the California Medical Association numerous times.

Tune in for a Mother’s Day special talk. And happy Mother’s Day to all the moms (traditional and not so traditional) out there!

If we are so lucky, our mothers live long into old age. And so often, as people age, they require the help and care of loved ones, often from their children. How does one simultaneously be their parent’s child, caregiver, and trusted friend? And how do we repay all that mom has given us at a time when she needs us, but may not want to need us?

⏰ Live Sunday, tune in for my talk.

Sunday, 5/11 at 4:00 PM Pacific
Watch live on Instagram.
Or check YouTube for the recording in a few days.

I’ve been a caregiver for both of my parents into their late nineties and for my mother-in-law, who lived to an incredible 102! I’ve also supported friends and family members as they’ve stepped into this challenging role. I’ll share what I’ve learned as both a doctor and a child-caregiver.

I’ll be checking Instagram for questions so if you have any additional questions that you’d like me to address, please add them to the comments of this post.

Let me know what questions you have! And tune in for this upcoming talk!

Loss of estradiol underlies the increase of urinary incontinence in menopause for two main reasons — loss of collagen and dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system.

Estradiol maintains the production of collagen, which is in all of the connective tissue in the body, including in and around the vagina. This is why, in menopause, pelvic health can really suffer in women. Increasing rates of stress urinary incontinence are one aspect of this.

Also, estradiol plays a critical role in the health of the autonomic nervous system. So loss of estradiol can change sensations in the bladder and in the way the brain perceives and processes the urge to urinate, which is why menopause can increase the risk for urge incontinence.

Who is at risk for urinary incontinence?

The short answer: everyone. But, women much more than men. Pregnancy and a vaginal delivery increase the risk, especially for urge incontinence. And menopause increases the risk for all types of incontinence.

The big take away is that urinary incontinence is very common and very treatable. If incontinence is affecting your life, seek help from a medical professional.

The difference between urge and stress incontinence is...

Urge incontinence is a condition where, when you have the urge to pee, you immediately have to pee NOW. And if you don’t get to a bathroom fast enough, you could lose control and empty your entire bladder.

Stress incontinence is where you may leak when you do activities that increase stress on the abdominal region. So, things like coughing, sneezing, laughing, jumping, and running can cause urine to leak out. Usually it’s a small amount, but sometimes it’s significant. Just not the full bladder.

Of course, you can also have what’s called mixed urinary incontinence where you have both urge and stress incontinence.

All forms of incontinence are significant and warrant treatment to improve physical and emotional health and overall quality of life.
