Nutrition

The old cliché that you are what you eat is truer now than ever. Unfortunately, finding and
preparing real healthy foods has become a major challenge. Our food is littered with artificial colors,
flavors, preservatives, pesticides, herbicides, and various bisphenols and PCBs, and much of it is
genetically modified. Most diseases and medical conditions have a nutritional component. Gallstones,
kidney stones, headaches, gastroesophogeal reflux, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, depression,
cancer, hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes, arthritis, infertility, gynecological problems,
osteoporosis, and acne are only a few conditions strongly influenced by diet.

Denise Canellos has a master’s degree in nutrition and did her master’s thesis on nutrition and cancer.
We believe in the use of food as medicine and that nutrition is a key part of all healing regimens.
Complementing the nutritional expertise of Denise are the other skilled professionals on our staff —
naturopaths, endocrine specialist, fitness specialist, and physicians. Each provides nutritional advice to
patients.

Another area concerning nutrition is obesity, which has reached epidemic proportions. Our staff
works to assist you in achieving a healthy body composition and we have several weight loss programs
available. For our patients who desire a personalized dietary program, working one-on-one with Denise
is an extremely effective option. Please see the section entitled “Weight Reduction” for additional
information of our several programs.

Food sensitivities and food allergies are also a growing problem. Denise can work with you to undergo a
GI Detox and or an elimination diet. The goal is to heal the GI tract and to determine which foods should
be eliminated from the diet for some period of time. For those who need to be gluten or dairy free,
or desire to be on the Paleo Diet, Denise can work with you to create menus and find meals the entire
family will enjoy.
